As the leaves change and blow softly to the ground, we welcome earthy, nude tones back into our wardrobe and layers that make us feel cozy and chic. If you like the thrill of seeing how many times you can mix and match your favorite sweater before anyone notices it’s the same top, then a capsule collection is perfect for you. But I have to break it to you chances are they’ll never notice (unless they deep dive stalk your Instagram).

With a little help from our eco-fashionista, Jacqueline “Jaxx” Melecio — owner of SM Vintage, a shop dedicated to preloved, reworked clothing and accessories — we put together a capsule collection of must-have pieces for Fall + Winter. Jaxx opened up SM Vintage because, “I want to be the reason why you feel comfortable with what you wear and how you take care of the environment.”

A capsule collection is essential for keeping clothes out of landfills. We get to wear, re-wear, and trade these pieces for years because of their simple, timeless designs. With our curated picks, you’ll be able to layer and style them for endless outfit combinations and save money and the planet while looking oh so trendy!

Chunky Cardigan

Keep it casual with loose-fitting jeans, a crop top, and throw a chunky cardigan on top to complete your on-my-way-to-Target look. And, when you feel like you’re too-dressed for a lowkey girls night, slip on a cardigan to look dressed-enough. You’ll definitely need it to keep you warm on those cold nights of outdoor dining.

High-waisted Trousers or Corduroy

Textured bottoms are super fun to style because you can easily dress them up or down. To dress them up, wear heels and a long sleeve, one-piece underneath. To dress them down, wear chunky boots or sneakers with a cropped tee.

Turtleneck

We all used to hate turtlenecks as a kid, but let me tell you, it has come full circle for me. I love layering my turtleneck under oversized crewnecks or graphic tees to give them a dressier, not so average look. Plus, it keeps me warm and cozy. Fashionable yet functional.

Midi Dress

Jaxx says this is a must, “for this year’s zoom holiday party.” Once you find the perfect preloved midi dress, add a belt around your waist to accentuate your shape.

Leather Backpack

This basic essential is a must for commuters or running errands. Whether you wear it on one shoulder or on your back, you’ll be able to keep everything you (and your girlfriends) need when you’re out.

Jaxx’s close friend from Mexico handmakes leather backpacks with leftover scraps from her family’s ranch. She loves it because, “it’s a way to promote handmade work at fair prices. The materials used have a new path other than the landfill.”

Meet Jaxx:

Jaxx was born and raised in New Jersey, but she’s always stayed connected to her Mexican roots. Her fashion icon, “Maria Felix, basically the Liz Taylor of Mexico,” keeps things simple, elegant, and effortless. After years of working at an accounting firm in hustle-bustle SoHo, NYC, Jaxx decided to move to a small city in Mexico. It was there where she nurtured her passion for sustainable fashion.

SM Vintage was her way of connecting the two worlds of sustainability and style. “Every piece that we collect at SM Vintage has lived a past life, in some way, shape, or form.” Once it is in her hands, she reworks it and brings it back to life. She specializes in cropping old vintage t-shirts or button-downs to add that modern flare. She recently learned how to embroider and has a few hand-embroidered items in her shop.

SM Vintage is Jaxx’s way of keeping fabric out of landfills while teaching people how to love their clothes for longer. “If you don’t need it, donate it, rework it, or re-sell it.” Slow fashion by SM Vintage truly helps mitigate the impacts that the textile industry has on the environment, one reworked item at a time.
