WHO RUN THE WORLD? GIRLS.
With the overload of negative news in the media, it feels difficult to dissociate from the present moment. Particularly on how to make a change yourself.
You know… “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” but also on the plentitude of girls who are the change. We can never forget that there is always a silver lining.
For women’s month, we’re highlighting some ladies who are at the forefront of the sustainable fashion movement, from activists to engineers to authors and celebrities.

SOME LADIES WE ADMIRE…
Carry Somers, Founder of Fashion Revolution, a not-for-profit global movement
After the renowned disaster of the Rana Plaza collapse in April of 2013, Carry Somers invited consumers to ask #WhoMadeMyClothes. Generating a movement, with hundreds of thousands shares, consumer awareness heightened. Now every April, we celebrate Fashion Revolution Week and carry on Carry’s (pun intended) mission of “radically changing the way our clothes are sources, produced and consumed.”
Stacy Flynn, CEO & Founding partner of Evrnu, a textile innovations company
Evrnu is a textile innovation company who has invented a fiber made from discarded clothing. As a Global Textile Product Specialist and Sustainable Systems Expert, Stacy Flynn holds an MBA degree in Sustainable Systems and a BS degree in Textile Development and Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Kalpona Akter, Founder & Executive Director of Bangladesh Centre for Worker Solidarity
Former child garment factory-worker turned activist, Kalpona Akter advocates for safety, fair wages and the right to labor unions for workers. Her work urges Western brands to take action and sign the Bangladesh Safety Accord.
Eva Kruse, CEO of Global Fashion Agenda, A Non-profit Organization
Non-profit organization Global Fashion Agenda brings the fashion community together with its forums on sustainability. Its flagship event is Copenhagen Fashion Summit, which is the world’s most important forum on sustainable fashion. Eva Kruse has been pushing the movement since 2007, and in 2013 gave a TEDx Talk on the topic “Changing the world through fashion.”
Emma Watson, Actress and Activist
Actress turned activist Emma Watson is known for her advocacy for women’s rights and sustainability in the fashion industry. She works closely with Eco Age (see next) and vowed to only wear sustainable pieces on red carpet appearances under Eco Age’s Green Carpet Challenge. Her first challenge in 2016 was at the Met Gala, dressed in a Calvin Klein gown created from “Newlife fabric, a yarn engineered from used plastic bottles.” Watson has also partnered with brands like People Tree and Alberta Ferretti on collections made from sustainable materials.
Marie-Claire Daveu, Chief Sustainability Officer of Kering
French luxury group, Kering, houses brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, among others. Under Marie-Claire Daveu, Kering was named the second-most sustainable company across all industries worldwide and first in Luxury and fashion. Kering is now vocal and public with its sustainability targets, and we know how transparency is key in situations like this.
We are constantly inspired by women like these who are breaking the gender cycle as key leaders in the industry, and making a change full of compassion, courage and execution. What are ways that you are taking sustainability into your own hands? We’d love to hear.

My name is: Sophie Zembra
I’m a conscious entrepreneur who believes in: common sense. Year after year I find that the best way to be consistent and sustainable in all aspects of our lives is through common sense.
To me fashion is: freedom. I love to be unique instead of following what’s ‘trendy’, I enjoy the freedom of doing what I like.
My go-to outfit is: Dress and boots.
